Chapter 54: Other Uses
Mother has such a good temper now.
“It’s one thing for Mother to have a good temper, but we shouldn’t appear too unruly. Even if Mother isn’t angry, she’ll definitely worry that we’re disobedient. Mother works hard to earn money, so let’s not make her worry.” Bai Lixia advised.
“Yeah, Second Sister is right.” Bai Midou nodded vigorously.
Completely unaware of these conversations, Su Mulan finished digging up the tree root, split it with a hoe, and laid it out in the sun to dry for firewood. Only then did she sit down under the big paulownia tree, wipe her sweat with the cloth draped around her neck.
“Mother, here’s water.” Bai Lixia handed Su Mulan her bamboo tube.
“Mm.” Su Mulan took it and drank in small sips.
The bamboo tube, even though not left out in the sun, was warmed by the hot weather, lacking any coolness so that drinking from it didn’t quench her thirst.
If only there were chilled drinks in this era…
‘Ah, I really miss modern life.’
Su Mulan sighed inwardly, her brows involuntarily furrowing.
Water without sugar definitely isn’t as enjoyable as sweetened water…
Bai Lixia saw this scene and felt even more bitter in her heart.
They worked until the sun set, Su Mulan finally led Bai Lixia and Bai Midou back home, stewing the remaining braised pork with a few potatoes.
The braised pork was rich in flavor, and the broth was particularly fragrant and delicious, completely soaking the potatoes. Eating it, one could taste the full flavor of the meat in the potatoes, making it both fragrant and delicious, incredibly tasty.
The four little radishes praised with admiration, finishing every bit of the braised pork shreds and potatoes in their bowls, not leaving a drop of soup.
After dinner, they went to bed early, and the next morning, as usual, they dried the sweet potato slices and continued clearing and planting.
“Mom,” before Su Mulan prepared to take tools to work in the fields, Bai Shuilu stopped her.
“What’s the matter?”
“I’ve been idle at home anyway. We have that small millstone at home. It doesn’t have to be used standing up. I can grind while sitting. Mom, the corn kernels you bought, can I grind them into corn flour?” Bai Shuilu suggested.
“Grinding corn kernels into flour not only makes storage easier but also allows us to eat them whenever we want, which is more convenient,” Bai Shuilu continued.
Feeling guilty about staying idle at home while Su Mulan was busy, Bai Shuilu proposed grinding the corn kernels into flour as a way to help.
“Don’t worry about it,” Su Mulan replied.
“Mom, don’t worry. The millstone is small, and I can grind it while sitting without moving my feet, so there’s no risk of injury,” Bai Shuilu reassured, thinking Su Mulan was concerned about her feet.
“Actually, these corn kernels aren’t meant to be ground into corn flour,” Su Mulan explained. “I have another use for them.”
“Not for making corn flour? What else could they be used for?” Bai Shuilu was puzzled.
“I’ll show you when I come back at noon. Then you’ll understand,” Su Mulan said mysteriously, with a hint of mischievous smile.
Bai Shuilu didn’t press further and just smiled, “Alright, we’ll wait for you to show us.”
The other three little radishes scratched their heads in curiosity.
How do you use corn kernels, boil them?
But every year before harvesting the corn, each household would pick a few tender corn from the field to cook and eat as a treat, seeking a fresh taste. It can be said that this is not really a rare delicacy.
