“Mom, what… what is this?”
“This? This is called… corn. It’s also called popcorn. When corn kernels explode, they bloom like flowers, thus becoming popcorn.”
“This ‘corn,’ because it grows the same color as yellow jade and looks like grains of rice, is also called cornflower in some places. And some people also call it popcorn.”
While Su Mulan was talking, she swiftly transferred all the popcorn from the pot into two bamboo sieves, spreading them out to cool, allowing the popcorn to become even crispier and more delicious by releasing its own heat.
“Come, help me carry these out into the yard.” Su Mulan picked up one of the baskets and called out to Bai Lixia.
Bai Lixia was still curious about how the corn kernels turned into popcorn. She was holding one kernel of popcorn and examining it closely. When she heard Su Mulan’s words, she quickly picked up the bamboo basket and walked out of the kitchen with her.

“Lixia, put down the basket and have some too.”
Su Mulan grabbed another handful and handed it to Bai Shuiliu, who was sitting nearby. “Shuiliu, you should try some too.”

The four little radishes thanked her and stuffed the white, flowery popcorn into their mouths.
Crisp, fragrant, sweet…
