Chapter 46 Concern
Su Mulan was startled. She quickly squatted down and reached out to wipe her tears. “If you really want to go to the market, just tell me. It’s not that we can’t go. It’s just that our family is not doing well right now. Taking you to the market would be unfair to you. I feel so uneasy about it. That’s why I thought of waiting until I earn more money before taking you to the market properly.”
“If you really want to go, we can go tomorrow…”
Being a sensible child, Su Mulan really didn’t want to inconvenience them too much.
“It’s not that…”
Bai Zhuye choked up, holding onto Su Mulan’s arm.
The tears that fell down with a plop wetted Su Mulan’s sleeve. It was a long time before Bai Zhuye raised her head again, her eyes red and swollen. “Mom, you’re really good to us.”
Su Mulan was momentarily stunned.
She soon realized that Bai Zhuye was deeply grateful because she had promised to take them to the market to buy cloth for new clothes and to buy them flower ornaments. This gratitude had moved her to tears.
This child had truly endured a lot.
She had suffered so much that every part of her heart was affected. Because she had spent so long in darkness, she had finally tasted a bit of sweetness and seen a glimmer of light, causing the defenses in her heart to completely collapse.
Su Mulan felt a myriad of emotions in her heart. She reached out and gently touched Bai Zhuye’s forehead, her voice soft, “I’m your mother, of course I have to treat you well.”
“Will you continue to be so good to us in the future?” Bai Zhuye asked with a choked voice.
During this time, Su Mulan had indeed treated them very well, better than other families, even better than a birth mother would treat her own children. But the more she did so, the more worried she became, worried that one day this kindness might disappear.
As soon as these words were spoken, the other three children, including Bai Shuiliu, couldn’t help but look at Su Mulan.
Their eyes were full of hope, but also apprehension.
Clearly, this was a question they had been grappling with all along, one they had wanted to ask for a long time.
During this time, these four little turnips were delighted by her sudden kindness, but more than that, they were probably anxious as well. They were uncertain why she had become kind, anxious because they didn’t know when she might revert to her previous unkind self.
Previously, they had always thought that actions spoke louder than words in expressing her intentions. Now it seemed that, besides actions, words needed to be said as well.
Otherwise, others wouldn’t understand her intentions, as they weren’t mind readers.
“Of course I will,” Su Mulan replied firmly, nodding emphatically. Facing the hopeful gaze of the four little radishes, she smiled gently.
“In the past, my mind was confused, I did things without clarity, and didn’t even know what I had done. Now that I’ve come to my senses, of course I will be good to you all. As long as I’m alive in the future, I will definitely treat you well.”
“If you don’t believe it, shall we pinky promise?”
“We believe you, Mom,” Bai Zhuye said, wiping her tears and choking up.
“You are all lovable children, and I love you very much. I really can’t pamper you enough.”
Su Mulan stood up and patted Bai Zhuye’s little head. “Alright, with so many tears on your face, another gust of wind might cause a rash. Quickly wash up and get ready for dinner. If we wait any longer, it’ll be pitch dark.”
Afraid that saying more might turn this sentimental scene into a sobbing session for her and the four radishes, Su Mulan stopped herself.
