Chapter 55: Exploding with Excitement
“Hey, Second sister, what else can Mom do with corn kernels?” During their work in the fields, Bai Midou couldn’t resist asking Bai Lixia.
“I don’t know either,” Bai Lixia scratched her head. “But since Mom said we’ll find out later, when she makes it for us to eat, then we’ll know.”
“Well, just trust her. Since Mom sounded so pleased when she talked about it, it must be incredibly delicious. We’ll just wait for it then,” Bai Midou reassured.
“True,” Bai Midou nodded, glancing sideways at Bai Lixia. As he continued to look, he couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
“What are you laughing at?” Bai Lixia asked, puzzled.
“Nothing much, just feeling like a second sister is different from before,” Bai Midou said. “In the past, second sister was the most cautious around Mom, always reminding us to be careful around her. Now, hearing second sister talk like this, it seems like she trusts Mom a lot.”
“Really?” Bai Lixia blinked, reached down to pick up a small stone by her feet, and threw it far away.
“Alright, enough idle chatter. Let’s get to work quickly and finish early so we can go home,” Bai Lixia urged.
“Yeah,” Bai Midou nodded, lowering his head to continue clearing away the weeds and sneakily glanced at Bai Lixia again.
Second sister, she really is…
Bai Midou shook his head with a helpless smile.
But it’s not particularly strange either. He also trusts Su Mulan tightly.
As for the reason for trust…
In everyday meals, dishes like braised pork are one thing, Su Mulan treating them gently is another, and her reluctance to drink sugared water is another. Most importantly, whenever they see Su Mulan now, it seems like there’s a backbone in their hearts.
As for more reasons, he couldn’t quite explain.
Anyway, he just feels that Su Mulan now is very reliable, compelling people to trust her.
Presumably, second sister feels the same way.
It’s almost noon, Su Mulan begins bustling in the kitchen, with Bai Lixia helping to stoke the fire nearby.
Watching Su Mulan add oil, white sugar, and grain kernels into the big pot…
Bai Lixia’s eyes widened.
Sugar-fried corn kernels?
She had never eaten it before. She had eaten roasted corn before, but they were tender corn.
With these dried corn kernels, if they were fried again, wouldn’t they be too hard to chew?
Just as Bai Lixia was thinking this, crackling sounds suddenly erupted, causing the lid of the pot to rattle loudly.
Bai Lixia jumped in surprise and quickly stood up.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, sit down,” Su Mulan hurriedly reassured, “it’s just that the corn kernels explode open.”
Explode open… just like that?
Bai Lixia’s eyes widened again in disbelief as she looked at Su Mulan and then at the wisps of white steam drifting from under the pot lid. Unable to contain herself any longer, she asked, “Mom, did the pot explode along with it?”
Hearing the commotion, she couldn’t help but feel that the word “explode” wasn’t a good choice of words.
“It won’t, it’s fine now,” Su Mulan reassured, tilting her head to listen. Hearing no more noise from the pot, she opened the lid and carefully turned the contents with a large spatula.
Bai Lixia was curious and stood up to take a closer look.
Initially covering only the bottom of the pot, the yellow corn kernels were now almost filling the entire pot. Moreover, they had transformed into fluffy white chunks resembling cotton balls.
