Chapter 67: Difficult to Get Along With

Liu searched from the corner of the kitchen and found a coarse porcelain bowl that had been cleaned very well. She started tapping it lightly with chopsticks.

“Meow…”

Da Huang meowed in response and swiftly trotted over from under the eaves.

Originally heading towards the bowl, Da Huang changed course upon seeing Su Mulan. With a meow, it approached her, rubbing against her legs, despite Su Mulan’s pants and shoes being covered in mud.

This scene surprised Liu greatly. “Da Huang seems quite fond of you.”

Normally, Da Huang was very particular about cleanliness, always choosing clean paths to walk on. Apart from catching mice and sparrows, it never ate food from the ground or from anyone’s hands or bowls. But now, it seemed unconcerned about the mud on Su Mulan’s pants and shoes.

“I quite like Da Huang too.” Su Mulan lifted up the robust Da Huang. “I had a cat when I was young, and looked a lot like Da Huang.”

Da Huang meowed again a couple of times, rubbed against Su Mulan’s arm, then started licking its fur, which had gotten wet from Su Mulan returning in the rain.

“If you like cats, my family has a big tabby cat, it just had kittens recently, not sure if they’re a month old yet. When I go back home these days, if there are any kittens left, I’ll bring one back for you,” Liu said.

“Thank you, Auntie Huo,” Su Mulan replied quickly. “Having a cat is very useful, it keeps the house much cleaner.”

If there’s a cat at home, it should make the four little radishes very happy and also help them maintain their innocence and childlike nature.

Thunder rumbled, and the wind picked up, shaking the pomegranate trees in the courtyard.

Su Mulan didn’t linger any longer. After chatting with Liu, she hurried home with Da Huang in her arms and her hat on.

After making sure that Su Mulan had gone far away, Liu cleaned the dishes, closed the courtyard gate with her hat on, and then took the popcorn Su Mulan had given her and walked towards the main room.

Han was in the main room, bowing repeatedly towards the Buddha on the altar. When she stood up and saw Liu, she smirked, “What did that Su family woman come here for just now?”

“Just now, Sister Su came to borrow Da Huang and brought these snacks,” Liu straightened her posture as she spoke. “She called it something like popcorn, which sounded quite strange to me. I initially said no, but Sister Su insisted, so I had to accept them.”

“Sister Su seems to be cherishing the old relationship between our families…”

While speaking, Liu glanced at Han secretly, hoping for a nod or a smile from her.

Han didn’t even look at Liu, took a sip and continued, “The Su family is so poor now that they’re resorting to farming. What good things could they possibly have? Probably not even a decent pancake. They just give it a fancy name to save face. You’re treating it like a treasure. You act so naive, being so petty.”

“Mother…” Liu suddenly felt a pang in her heart.

In the past, they always said she only helped Bai Shuilu and her family without any return, but now that Su Mulan brought food, they were criticizing the quality. It was always like this, always pointing out her faults.

This mother-in-law of hers, she really wasn’t easy to get along with.
